How to Calculate Tiles for Your Tiling Project

Measuring for tiles is easier than you think. To start, measure the length and width of the surface you plan to tile – whether it’s a wall, floor, or splashback. Multiply these together to get the total area in square meters. Next, enter your tile size into our calculator. The tool will estimate how many tiles you'll need based on the area and tile dimensions.

Why Add Extra Tiles for Wastage?

We always recommend ordering at least 10% extra tiles to account for cuts, breakages, or future repairs. If you're working with complicated layouts or diagonal patterns, consider increasing this to 15%. Our tile calculator includes this wastage automatically, so you’re covered.

Common Tile Sizes and Coverage

Tile sizes vary widely — from small 10x10cm mosaics to large 60x60cm porcelain slabs. As a general guide:

  • 30x30cm tiles cover 11 tiles per m²
  • 60x60cm tiles cover about 2.8 tiles per m²
  • Subway tiles (like 10x20cm) require around 50 tiles per m²

Our tile calculator works with any custom size, so you can enter the exact dimensions.
